Donegal County Council in partnership with Letterkenny IT and in conjunction with Engineers Ireland STEPS Programme are hosting an event ‘Engineering Opportunities in Donegal’ on Monday, 10th February 2014 from 10am – 2pm in the Killybegs Tourism College, Training Restaurant MB103/Upper Level.
This exciting showcasing event will host various Electronic and Engineering companies who will provide information and advice to those wishing to pursue a career in engineering. This event is aimed primarily at second level Students and will provide them with a chance to speak to representatives from various companies. However, the event is open to anyone who would like to attend.
Speaking this week, County Manager Seamus Neely said ‘we are very happy to collaborate with Engineers Ireland to support Engineers Week 2014. We welcome involvement of Engineering companies in Killybegs area as well as Letterkenny IT to promote opportunities in the field of engineering as a career path”.
He added “Killybegs, with hydraulic and mechanical services infrastructure, plays a pivotal role in the development and support of fishing, energy and cruise sectors, creating employment opportunities for people with the right skills set. We hope to build on this event in the future by highlighting the many strands and opportunities the engineering sector has to offer”.
This year Engineers Week will take place from 9th to 15th February and will highlight the possibilities a career in engineering can offer and the vital role played by engineers in the community today.
John Power, Chartered Engineer and Director General, Engineers Ireland, said: “Engineers are central to Ireland’s economic development and we need to ensure that well-qualified engineers are available in the future. Engineers Week is a great opportunity for those of us in the profession to introduce our young people to the world of engineering. It is a week when hundreds of educational and fun engineering, technology and science events take place across the country for people of all ages to enjoy.”
Companies, local authorities, third-level institutes and outreach organisations around the country have been invited to get involved by hosting an engineering-related event or taking part in visits to local schools during the week. Engineers Ireland's schools outreach programme, STEPS, is providing support for these organisations as they engage directly with students, promoting the significant contribution of engineers to their localities. Last year, over 33,000 participants took part in 497 events during Engineers Week, supported by the efforts of 1,800 volunteers from the engineering profession, with almost 160 organisations involved around the country.
Commenting on Engineers Week Prof Mark Ferguson, Director General, Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government said: “SFI is pleased to partner with Engineers Ireland to support Engineers Week 2014. It is vital that we work in partnership with industry to encourage our young people to increase their knowledge of science and engineering and consider further study in these disciplines. It is these skills that are required to both drive sustainable economic recovery in Ireland and to ensure future employment.”
